Telecom Department Blocks Fraud Calls Using Advanced Technology

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and telecom companies in India have worked together to stop International fraud calls. They used a system called the “International Incoming Spoofed Calls Prevention System,” which has blocked 70% of spoofed calls. This has reduced the daily number of fraud calls from 1.5 crore to just 5 lakh.

Fighting New Scams

Fraudsters have started using virtual private networks (VPNs) to hide their identity and make their calls look like they are coming from other countries. To stop this, DoT is working with international telecom operators and using artificial intelligence (AI). However, this is a complicated issue that requires multiple solutions and some costs.

AI Tools Making a Difference

An AI tool called ASTR has helped identify fake SIM card connections. It found 78 lakh fraudulent SIMs taken by the same person under different names. This led to 365 FIRs and action against 1,900 shops for breaking rules.

Blocking Suspicious Users

DoT noticed that some Indian mobile users roaming in Southeast Asia were involve in scams. Since July 2024, they have blocked 2 lakh suspicious mobile connections and nearly 10,000 phones linked to fraud.

Team Effort Against Scams

A “Digital Intelligence Platform” has been set up to share information about telecom fraud. It includes 520 organizations like security agencies, police, banks, telecom companies, and platforms like WhatsApp.

With these combined efforts, the telecom department is working hard to reduce fraud and protect people from scam calls.
