The Indian government is taking strong steps to fight cybercrime by blocking 80 lakh fake SIM cards. This move aims to make mobile users safer from cybercrime and fraud.

80 Lakh SIM Cards Blocked

The government has deactivated over 80 lakh SIM cards issued using fake documents. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) used advanced AI tools to identify and block these SIM cards, preventing them from being used for illegal activities.

6.78 Lakh Numbers Linked to Cybercrime Blocked

In addition to fake SIM cards, the government has also blocked 6.78 lakh mobile numbers directly involved in cybercrime. This step is part of a larger effort to reduce digital fraud and make telecommunications safer.

AI Tools to Detect Fake Numbers

The DoT used AI-powered tools to find mobile numbers registered with fake documents. It identified 78.33 lakh such numbers, which have now been deactivated. The Department shared this update on its official X (Twitter) account.

Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia highlighted the role of the DoT and the Ministry of Home Affairs in tackling cybercrime. The 1930 cybercrime helpline has also saved Rs 3,500 crores for 10 lakh people by handling complaints quickly.

New Policies by TRAI

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has introduced stricter rules to fight cybercrime:

  1. Message Traceability Rule: From December 11, 2024, this rule allows telecom operators to trace the origin of fake messages.
  2. Blocking Fake Calls and Messages: Starting October 1, 2024, telecom operators are following stricter rules to block spam calls and messages at the network level.

Benefits for Users

These measures are expected to reduce fake telemarketing calls, spam messages, and fraud. With AI tools and new guidelines, the government is working to make the digital space safer for everyone.
