Communication has come a long way, evolving from simple messaging to advanced video calls. As technology continues to shape how we connect, we’re making changes to better serve our users.

To simplify our free communication services and better meet customer needs, Skype will be retired in May 2025. Instead, we’re focusing on Microsoft Teams (free)—a modern platform for messaging, calling, and collaboration.

Teams include familiar Skype features like one-on-one and group calls, messaging, and file sharing. Plus, it offers more—meeting hosting, calendar management, and community building—all for free.

Millions already rely on Teams for work, school, and personal connections, with meeting usage growing 4X in the past two years.

As we move forward with Teams, we’re committed to making the transition seamless. Skype users can easily log into Teams with their existing accounts, ensuring a smooth switch to the future of communication.

What’s Next for Skype Users?

As Skype transitions, users have two options to stay connected:

Switch to Microsoft Teams for Free– Skype users can switch to Microsoft Teams (free) without any cost. Starting today, those in the Teams and Skype Insider programs can sign into Teams using their existing Skype credentials. In the coming days, this feature will be available to all Skype users. Once logged in, your chats and contacts will automatically sync, allowing you to continue conversations without interruption. During the transition period, Teams users can chat and call Skype users, and vice versa, ensuring seamless communication across both platforms.

Easily Export your Skype Data– If you prefer not to migrate to Teams, you can download your Skype data, including chat history, contacts, and call logs. This allows you to keep a backup of your important conversations and information.

Skype will continue to be available until May 5, 2025, giving users enough time to explore Microsoft Teams, transfer data, and choose the option that best suits their needs.

Getting Started with Teams for Free

Switching to Teams is easy, and you can still use Skype during the transition.

Here’s how to begin:

  • Download Teams from the official Microsoft website
  • Log in using your Skype credentials.
  • Access all your Skype chats and contacts in Teams.

Updates to Skype Paid Features

We are making changes to Skype’s paid services. Going forward, new customers will no longer be able to purchase Skype Credit or subscriptions for international and domestic calls. Existing users can continue using their Skype Credit and subscriptions until their next renewal period. After May 5, 2025, the Skype Dial Pad will remain accessible for paid users via the Skype web portal and within Teams.
