As the use of smartphones and the internet has grown, so have the risks. While smartphones have made many tasks easier, they have also given scammers and cybercriminals new ways to trick people. To protect users from online scams and fraud, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has taken some important steps.

Recently, TRAI told telecom companies to start tracking commercial messages and OTPs to prevent fraud. This was a big decision, and in August, TRAI issued rules for telecom companies to follow. Since then, TRAI has changed the deadline for implementing these rules several times.

TRAI Extends Deadline

Telecom companies were first given until October 31 to start tracking OTP messages. However, after requests from companies like Jio, Airtel, Vi, and BSNL, the deadline was extended to November 30. Now, as the deadline is about to end, telecom companies must start tracking commercial and OTP messages.

OTP Delays Likely

If Jio, Airtel, Vi, and BSNL follow the new rules from December 1, OTP messages may take longer to arrive. This could affect tasks like banking or making reservations, as you may experience delays in receiving your OTP. TRAI is doing this to prevent scammers from using fake OTP messages to gain access to people’s devices, which can lead to financial losses. TRAI has decided to enforce this rule strictly.
